November 8, 2017 Reply Christian Adventure Films Thanks for the info to contemplate in reality style videos. November 8, 2017 Reply Cooking With A Little Spice I definitely have been trying to add storytelling in my videos, after you have talked about how important they are. Even though it’s a Cooking Channel I try to kind of add a story of why I’m cooking the recipe in the video. My last one was because I was going to a Halloween party and I show clips of the party. It seems to be going well and people really enjoy the videos, plus they get really hungry after watching my videos ? November 8, 2017 Reply Stories Lived Great! Thx 🙂 November 8, 2017 Reply Eat Live the World Oh my gosh. I see so many youtubers making the mistake of not understanding how important it is to get a clear and interesting story for the videos you make. As a teacher, I make my lesson interesting to get my students attention! <3 November 8, 2017 Reply Suraj Sharma Give us an example of a story by creating a video…. Thank you.. Awesome video! I just go with the flow. Like how I plan to vlog my birthday tomorrow. All I know to do is film whatever happens. Dinner, presents and maybe shopping. I'm trying to figure out this story thing and how to incorporate it into my style of videos. November 8, 2017 Reply StarSCIENCE LOVE YOU November 8, 2017 Reply EpicCaleb hi, can you do a live video?Like, NOW??:):) November 8, 2017 Reply Luke Sherran Really useful, thanks for sharing Tim! November 8, 2017 Reply Gman's World I know this is a storytelling video but I couldn't find a video you've done on this and I'm confused. I just got hit for a wheel change on a hand truck. All my other content is monetized and I didn't do anything different than the other videos. I'm completely confused. All my videos are family friendly and I can't even challenge it because I don't get 1000 views in 7 days let alone do I have 10,000 viewers. If you're going to say my stuff is not appropriate then tell me why or let me challenge it no matter how many views I get. It's like YouTube only wants to help the bigger channels now and if this keeps up a new competitor may evolve for a platform choice. Any help would be nice. Thanks! November 8, 2017 Reply Mohit Whabi This is a great format! November 8, 2017 Reply Val's Life aka Puddles FPV Glowing Tim. Lol. Story telling is key. November 8, 2017 Reply NerdSync A more brutal term in filmmaking for cutting the fat is "killing your babies" and I think that encapsulates it a bit better. I think anyone can find places to cut small things here and there to help the pacing of the story, but the real trouble is when entire sections need cut or reworked, but the writer/storyteller is too attached and doesn't realize that it's dragging everything down. People often feel like certain parts of their story are more necessary than they are, but by the time they take everything to the editing room, that one "crucial" part of the story might not be as crucial as it was initially. It might not be important to anyone but themselves. It's their "baby" and they don't want to kill it. But for the sake of the story, it must be done. Like I said, it's a much more brutal way to phrase it, but I think that's what helps get the idea across. November 8, 2017 Reply Lifestyle Anytime Thanks, this is so helpful, I'm learning by doing and recognize that I need to work on my story telling. November 8, 2017 Reply Draw With Steve Harpster Excellent video, I live in Cincy and want to check out the Rebel Pilgrim workshops now. Thanks again. Thanks Tim November 8, 2017 Reply My Car Life I'm really glad you made this video with some quick tips. I haven't done many vlog style videos and I know story telling isn't my strong suit, but I just came across a subject related to my niche that I really want to make a video about, so hopefully I can take these tips and use them to help get my point across. I'm genuinely curious to see how this video comes out so I need to film it quickly while I'm still stirred up about the topic. November 8, 2017 Reply Abigail Marie Who else is from Cincinnati! I’m writing a fiction book and this is really helpful. So far I’m doing good with this stuff. It’s a lot hard via video for me. November 8, 2017 Reply PuzzlesIRL - Dark Wacky Comedy Isn't YouTube different though? I'm thinking of the creators I watch and those who make similar content like TomSka; the asdfasdf videos do not seem to follow this formula; it is just climax after climax after climax (which is kinda an oxymoron but I think you get the point). If I think of Domics, Jaden, Grade or odds1 then they seem to do most of these things except the introduction because their audience already knows them. And VSauce seems to go all over the place yet I think that they are the most engaging out of off the YouTuber channels I have mentioned. Am I misunderstanding something? November 8, 2017 Reply Jonathan Octo Hey, So I have a question, why do people on YouTube reupload other people with out their permission? I found it dumb to some people youtube take your video or someone's video with out permission. I am a live show producer in real life and i decided to do an experiment and develop a youtube channel from concept development to content delivery. I have studied your video in detail . Now im starting , i have exactly 0 subscribers but ill be tracking progress versus a paper stack model of platforms and applications that developed to help me understand how to connect the many pieces that need to connect end to end. thanks for your help, its a start ! November 21, 2017 Reply Relyea There are a couple of Ted Talks that I thought were interesting. I think one thing that we are able to do that is special with video is that we don't have to just tell people what we are going to do coming up later in the video… we can literally show them something crazy crazy going on then have the video start and explain how we got there. Specifically with gaming I want to start showing something dramatic early on for 5-10 seconds and then get into the how to portion of the video. We will see how it goes! November 22, 2017 Reply Moster Johanne My mind is stuck on the paper you showed – it says: People don't care about the highlights if you don't share the lowlights… It's probably true, but it is so scary, it is so much easier to cut out the bad parts, than to actually show them! I am embarking on incorperating story-elements into my videos (I do tutorials, so…) but I don't know – do people even want that? It's so hard D: November 28, 2017 Reply Prognemus Thanks for the great tips! I was a big follower of your Student Min Blog and Now you've been a huge help to me the past 2 months as I've prepared to launch my channel. I've made a bunch of mistakes but not near as many as I would've made without your help. I had too much fat in stories my latest video. But it was good to know you encourage us to tell stories on Youtube. I sort of had the impression we shouldn't tell stories on youtube. So thanks for your coaching. Also your review of videos of 1000 or less subs has been a huge help. Cut 3 min out of my trailer because of your advice 🙂 . Keep up the good work your mission is helping me accomplish my mission. I'm very interested in story telling, but how do you feel we should apply it to education channels? March 15, 2018 Reply Ramsey Customs - turbocobra Hey Tim, long time follower, I just watched your most recent uploaded and linked here through your end screen. I have heard you mention the 50% thing at the end of your video. I have noticed if I do an abrupt ending, I have a much higher retention at the end of the video that do not have end screens, but you also want to use end screens to keep people in your content, so what gives? Love your channel! I love telling stories and see value in that when I have a captive live audience. And I see a lot interest in why it's important to to tell stories buzzing on YouTube in general. But if you have for example, a math channel, how do you integrate stories? April 22, 2018 Reply Audictivo Mix What are your thoughts regarding an instructional video (tutorial) and storytelling Tim? April 23, 2018 Reply FitForceFX Hi Tim. This is very helpful. However I run a fitness channel and my content is 99% real-time free workouts with a personal trainer. I think retention is hard for channels like this where you physically have to DO something rather than just sit and watch. Any tips for this kind of channel? How do I incorporate storytelling into this? Thank you!! April 24, 2018 Reply Jk Canvas thank you fro the video. Your encouragement and advice is really helping. I am struggling to find my niche but I am on the way. have your channel subscribed and will be watching it. Need to research on how to start a youtube channel.
